Humpday Celebration: 10 Things We Miss From The 1990s

We are total children of the 90′s, and frequently discuss what we miss most and wish would make a come back. Since Twinkies and NKOTB made recent come backs, it got us thinking about what other great food/TV/music/inventions disappeared that should really make a come back… particularly those from the 1990′s (because it was the BEST decade). Here’s what we came up with…

Top 5 Things Sara Misses from the 1990s

  1. ABC’s TGIF Original Run: When I was just a young lass, there were many reasons to look forward to Friday’s… No school, sleeping in, sleep overs, but nothing quite matched up to watching the TGIF line-up on ABC! Boy Meets World, Family Matters, Step by Step, Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper, and Sister, Sister… A whole Friday night of GREAT, 90′s TV! Eek! Evidently, “TGIF” still exists on ABC, but let’s be serious, the line-up of shows does not even compare to what it was in the original run. (I mean seriously, Shark Tank?!) We all need to revolt to bring the original TGIF back on air!

  2. Pogs: Who ever thought that kids would find value in little round pieces of cardboard with graphics on them was a genius. Pogs were like currency in elementary school, “I will trade you five eight balls, three poisons, and two slammer whammers for your holographic slammer. AND… I’ll give you my hohos at lunch ALL week.” Nothing like teaching children how to negotiate and gamble at a ripe age.

  3. Aerosmith Music Videos feat. Alicia SilverstoneI LOVE Aerosmith and I LOVE(D) Alicia Silverstone, and in the 1990′s those two went hand-in-hand. “Cryin’,” “Amazing,” “Crazy”… All great songs with awesome music videos. I thought Alicia Silverstone was SO cool when she skipped school, stripped and went skinny dipping… I mean, what eight-year-old wouldn’t?
  4. AOL Instant Messenger: Countless hours were spent perfecting your Info with the most cryptic of lyrics, carefully chosen shout outs (“SOs”) and putting up a clever away message whenever you’re parents called you downstairs for dinner. A new year, a new screen name, new AIM possibilities…away-message
  5. Best Friend Jewelry: I’m not sure if the kids are still doing this, but my I have vivid memories of BFF jewelry. You could be flying high on cloud nine at morning recess with your bestie, and by lunch you were taking the yin back to your yin yang BFF necklace and giving it to someone else. 90-necklace

1. Tamagotchi: Remember the days when instead of immediately checking your cellphone when you wake up, you used to look at your Tamagotchi and made sure he was still alive?   You would fill him with life-saving sustenance, love and cuddles to make them happy Gotchi’s, and make sure that they are well-behaved and do not make noises when they don’t really need something.  Making sure you keep up with this incredibly important maternal/paternal tasks increases their Health, Love and Discipline meters, knowing your Tamagotchi is thriving!   When I was in high school I had to take care of a bag of flour for a week and pretend that they were my baby.   Why didn’t we use a Tamagotchi instead??

2. 90′s Music- This might be cheating because I am choosing more than one, but it is so hard to pick just one 90′s band.  I frequently listen to the 90′s station on Pandora and follow a 90′s playlist on Spotify and love it!  But, if I had to choose my top 90′s bands, it would have to be Backstreet Boys, Spice Girls, and Hanson.  There was an epic battle in the 90′s between Backstreet Boys (BSB) and N*Sync.  You had to pick one that you liked more, and pledge your undying allegiance to that band.  Well, I was a BSB girl and had many posters (from Teen Bop, of course) covering my walls of Brian, Howie, Nick, AJ and Kevin.  When I was growing up, there was only one person I wanted to be…Ginger Spice.  Geri Halliwell was one of the only redheaded celebrities so I thought she was SO cool.  Since the 90′s I have happily dressed up was her many times, and I am not afraid to admit it.  Hanson was the first cassette tape that I bought and I LOVED Taylor!  Hanson is coming to the Minnesota State Fair, and I will be sure to be at the stage living out my girlish fantasy and screaming my love for Taylor. :)

3. Lisa Frank- Although August means the end of summer and the start of the school year, one thing I loved about August was it meant back-to-school shopping.  I relished in buying new school supplies including my 96 Crayola crayon box, mirrors for my awesome locker, and Lisa Frank folders!  Lisa Frank offers the most colorful, design-filled products ever.  When I was working full-time at a high school last year I bought Lisa Frank valentines and was appalled when none of the students knew what Lisa Frank was.  Of course, I made them all take one and at least to pretend to appreciate it as much as I do! I mean, really, why wouldn’t you love a Technicolor bear with a hat, or a Dalmatian with rainbow color spots??

4. Beanie Babies- When I originally started buying Beanie Babies I thought I would be able to finance the rest of my life when I resell them 20 years later.  Well, I wouldn’t say that’s exactly true, but they are still stored and ready to be sold.  I loved Beanie Babies.   Whether they were the full-size babies that that the cute “TY” on their ear, or the mini’s that you would get in McDonald’s happy meals, I loved them all!  There were certain ones I allowed myself to play with, but the rest I tried to keep in mint condition so they would be sold for MILLIONS one day.  Now kids have Bratz dolls and Transformers.  Bean-filled stuffed animals are so much cooler….

5. Full House- My favorite part of Full House? Jesse and the Rippers.  Uncle Jessie (John Stamos) and the other members singing Forever Young melted my heart every time.  In fact, Jessie and the Rippers appeared on The Jimmy Kimmel Show about a week ago and reunited…see it here!  But, I loved everything about this show.  I thought they had the coolest family and wanted to be one of the daughters.  It was one of the first shows to show different family makeup’s rather than the typical Mom and Dad set up.  Uncle Joey, Uncle Jessie, Rebecca and the boys all under once roof made kids feel like their family was a lot more normal.  It is kind of sad how much the childhood stars have struggled since this show, but growing up on the set of a TV show must have been a strange childhood.  I hope some day I get the Full House boxset so I can spend copious amounts of time watching this show!

Sara and I consistently reminisce about the “good days” of the 90′s.  We both feel that we grew up in a pretty awesome decade, filled with awesome memories.  We also have a great idea for a bar….a 90′s themed one!  Everything will be decorated in the 90′s, the TV’s will have reruns of 90′s TV shows, the music will only be from the 90′s and if someone shows up wearing 80′s clothes instead of 90′s, they will be politely asked to leave. :)

What are your favorite memories from the 90′s??

-Sara and Allie
